Past President of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, Annette is well renowned as an Expert Witness and conference presenter. She has lectured on the Royal College of Surgeons, BSc Physiotherapy programme since 2001. Abbey Physiotherapy is a long established and trusted private physiotherapy practice where thousands of patients have received expert care and treatment over 30 years in practice.
Functional Capacity Evaluations have been performed here for 20 years. An FCE assists in determination of capacity to work and helps define the level of disability or impairment after an injury or medical condition. Annette Shanahan is a guest Lecturer on a range of MSc programmes and has undertaken research in work related injury over the past 20 years, presenting regularly at national and international medical conferences, such as the Irish Society of Occupational Medicine, Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, Health & Safety Authority, University College Cork, Department of Public Health & Epidemiology, to name a few.
Annette leads a team of enthusiastic highly qualified and expert Chartered Physiotherapists who are engaged in a wide variety of treatment, rehabilitation, assessment, health promotion, training and back room team support to elite inter county GAA hurling and football teams, currently to Clare GAA, Hurling and Limerick GAA, Football.

Maura graduated from University College Dublin in 2013 with an 2.1 Honours degree in Physiotherapy. She has worked in a range of healthcare settings, treating musculoskeletal disorders, sports injuries, neurological conditions, women’s health and paediatrics. She provides physiotherapy in care of the elderly population in a nursing home where diverse conditions benefit from physiotherapy, especially in falls prevention, post stroke management and arthritic joint management, increasing mobility function and independence. Abbey Physio also provides home visits for patients who are more dependant or require respiratory condition assessment and treatment.
She has gained extensive experience with Abbey Physio Clinic, who have provided consistent Chartered Physiotherapy services to Clare GAA for over 7 years. Maura is the Chief Team Physiotherapist for Clare U21 hurling team since 2015, having worked with them since 2014, and she continues in this role for the coming season. She has gained excellent expertise from working with various GAA club teams since graduation and enjoys working at training sessions and pitch side during matches.
Maura is also a qualified Pilates Instructor and enjoys delivering classes in small groups where individual attention can be given, especially to people with back or neck pain or post pregnancy, at beginner and intermediate level. Maura is also trained in dry needling which is beneficial in pain management in musculoskeletal conditions or chronic pain states.
She has a keen personal interest in sport and fitness and encourages everyone to attain their optimal level of function. She has competed since a young age in middle distance athletics and most recently is a very keen tag rugby player. She has experience of the developing world, having worked in both Haiti & India on volunteering trips. In India she volunteered as a physiotherapist working with children with cerebral palsy & developmental delay.
Seán graduated from the University of Limerick in 2012 with a 1st class Honours degree in Physiotherapy. He was awarded a scholarship from the Clinical Therapies Department of UL towards an MSc by Research investigating chronic Achilles and patella tendon pain in athletic populations. This work now forms part of his PhD studies in the University of Limerick, which he hopes to complete in 2016. His research project aims to inform the optimal management and rehabilitation of people with long standing Achilles and patellar tendon pain. He has had research published in international journals on hamstring injury and flexibility.
Seán has been working as a Chartered Physiotherapist at Abbey Physio since 2012, where he has gained experience with a wide variety of clinical populations, including elite level sporting teams. He worked as Chartered Physiotherapist with the Clare GAA Senior and U21 Hurling squads during their successful under 21 and senior All Ireland campaigns in 2013 when they were champions in both. He has been Senior Physiotherapist with Limerick GAA Senior Football team and continues to work with Limerick GAA squads.
He has extensive experience in the management and rehabilitation of many sports related injuries and has a particular interest in hamstring, groin and ACL injuries. His PhD studies have increased his experience in assessing and managing tendon disorders in runners and athletic populations based on the most current research and evidence based protocols. He has a special interest in the area of spinal pain, neck and low back pain. He worked previously in the pain management clinic in St Johns Hospital where he was involved in designing, implementing, and delivering group led exercise classes for people with chronic pain.
Seán is a keen sports enthusiast and continues to play gaelic football and rugby with his local club, Newcastle West. He is also a keen surfer, hiker and enjoys kayaking.
Mary has been Practice Administrator with Abbey Physio for over 20 years and has a wealth of experience in managing the appointment system and the Therapist schedules in her usual calm, friendly and efficient manner. Mary is a friend to all our Patients and will be able to reassure you if there is anything you need to know in advance of your appointment, concerning who to see, what to bring, what to wear, directions to the clinic or where to park!
