Past President of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, Annette is well renowned as an Expert Witness and conference presenter. She has lectured on the Royal College of Surgeons, BSc Physiotherapy programme since 2001. Abbey Physiotherapy is a long established and trusted private physiotherapy practice where thousands of patients have received expert care and treatment over 30 years in practice.
Functional Capacity Evaluations have been performed here for 20 years. An FCE assists in determination of capacity to work and helps define the level of disability or impairment after an injury or medical condition. Annette Shanahan is a guest Lecturer on a range of MSc programmes and has undertaken research in work related injury over the past 20 years, presenting regularly at national and international medical conferences, such as the Irish Society of Occupational Medicine, Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists, Health & Safety Authority, University College Cork, Department of Public Health & Epidemiology, to name a few.
Annette leads a team of enthusiastic highly qualified and expert Chartered Physiotherapists who are engaged in a wide variety of treatment, rehabilitation, assessment, health promotion, training and back room team support to elite inter county GAA hurling and football teams, currently to Clare GAA, Hurling.
BSc (HONS) Physio, MISCP
Barbara is an experienced Chartered Physiotherapist, achieving an honours degree in Physiotherapy from University of Brighton in 2010, having previously attained a Certificate in Applied Physiology and Health Science, in Carlow Institute of Technology.
Her initial working career was in the NHS in the UK, where she gained excellent experience in a variety of clinical areas, including Musculoskeletal, Orthopaedics, Rheumatology with Hydrotherapy, Neurology, Elderly Rehabilitation and Amputee rehabilitation. During this time, she developed her rehabilitative skills, with acute and chronic pain clients. She has specialised in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in private practice, and over the last number of years, she has worked in busy private practices, and with various GAA sports teams, giving her experience in the assessment and treatment of pain and injury.
Barbara is passionate about physiotherapy and strives to put the client first. She has undergone intensive post-graduate training in many areas to expand her knowledge base and to improve her expertise. In recent years, she has completed training courses in:
Barbara additionally attained a post-graduate Certificate in Spinal Manual Therapy which was taught by Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists from Australia. She is a certified APPI Pilates instructor and uses the Pilates approach regularly with clients. Her experience informs her ability to perform accurate movement analysis, and an acute awareness of the various factors which are important in assessment, enabling her to accurately determine the root of the problem and treat her patients successfully.
Barbara’s clinical interests include sports medicine, back & neck pain, pilates conditioning, injury prevention and exercise prescription for acute & chronic pain clients. She uses a variety of different treatment techniques including, deep tissue massage, mobilisation, deep dry needling, taping, tailored exercise prescription, and she provides specific advice and education. Having such a variety of treatment options gives the best outcomes with clients as no two cases are ever the same.
Outside of her working hours, Barbara enjoys yoga, spinning, circuits, cycling trips, swimming and practicing pilates. As an active person, Barbara understands the importance of being able to do the things we enjoy without pain or discomfort and knows what it takes to get you back on track. She is a member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and CORU and of the clinical interest groups; Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine, & Chartered Physiotherapists in Musculoskeletal Therapy.
MSc. Physio MISCP
Patrick is a graduate of Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, where he achieved a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy. He is a registered member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and CORU.
He has worked in a range of physiotherapy settings in both the UK and Ireland over the past number of years, where he has gained valuable experience with a wide variety of clinical populations in both private practice and with elite level sporting teams, in assessing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, sports injuries and neurological conditions.
Patrick has excellent expertise from working with various sporting teams and enjoys working at training sessions and pitch side during matches. He has extensive experience in the management and rehabilitation of many sports related injuries including hamstring, groin and ACL injuries. He is currently working as Chartered Physiotherapist with the Clare GAA Senior Hurling squad, and previously worked as Senior Physiotherapist with Murrayfield Wanderers RFC in Edinburgh. His own personal interest in sport is GAA Gaelic football, rugby and soccer.
He has a special interest in low back pain which he has extensively researched as it formed the basis of his dissertation for his Master’s degree. He has an in depth understanding of the assessment of patients with low back pain and has developed his ability to design specifically tailored treatment programmes to suit the individual. He treats a range of patients with spinal pain, postural dysfunction and neck and shoulder pain.
Patrick has gained valuable experience in Abbey Physio in Occupational Health and Ergonomics and frequently performs Ergonomic workplace assessments in a variety of occupational settings. He is the on site physiotherapist in a large multinational medical devices company based in Clonmel, where he provides Physiotherapy services to staff, and has often participated in specific on-site programmes, where Abbey Physio were invited to address company-wide ergo stretching and education programme delivery.
He has regular requests to provide complex medico-legal reports for the purpose of personal injury and accident claims litigation, in high court proceedings, from individual plaintifs, barristers, insurance companies and employers.
He has undertaken post-graduate study in the USA in Functional Capacity Evaluation in an effort to expand his knowledge in the area of Occupational health workplace assessment and rehabilitation. This focus on professional development ensures that Patrick’s approach to Physiotherapy is based on themost current research and evidence based protocols.
